Huge $50 Million Record Collection Up for Sale

According to a story posted today in Gizmodo, the world's largest collection of vinyl records is on the sales block.  Apparently this 3 million piece library is worth $50,000,000 dollars. However,  you can have it for the low price of 3 million dollars if you buy it today. It's definitely for a worthy cause.  Proceeds will help fund the owner's medical needs and other quality of life issues.

Interesting Vinyl Oriented Blog

bigblackdisc.com is a blog devoted to all things vinyl. Go ahead, check it out.

Mission Statement

Big Black Disk is as it suggests - a site dedicated to vinyl records.  More specifically, we report on and support the bands, labels, and independent record shops that make and sell new vinyl records.  It is our contention that vinyl records not only offer a superior sonic experience for enjoying music, but that they offer the greatest value for your money.  Most vinyl records being sold today include some manner of digital freebee, whether it is an actual full CD or a coupon with a code to access the MP3 download of the album.  When you buy the new vinyl, you usually get the digital … but not vice versa.

Dagogo Audiophile Ezine Reviews the Jeff Rowland 501 Mono Amps

An absolutely stellar Jeff Rowland Design Group review from Constantine Soo's Dagogo audiophile site:

Doug Schroeder ascertains the nature

JEFF ROWLAND DESIGN GROUP 501

mono amps

With a perfect face, a killer body and an ultra sexy voice, I would like to introduce America’s next Top Model… Jeff Rowland 501! You say, “That’s NO model!” I reply, Oh, yes it is; it’s got my vote for top model of Class D amp! As for Jeff Rowland, he is a gentlemanly designer who might be better off modeling Levis 501’s rather than be America’s Top Model. However, his 501 mono block amps are among the sexiest, most “talented” sounding Class D amps I’ve come across.

Class D is what makes them very interesting. Jeff has been known for decades as a consummate amp builder. His gear oozes opulence (that doesn’t sound good, but it is!) and distinction. Historically, his name has not been associated with chip amps, but if they hear the 501’s I’m sure they will. This is a breakthrough product, as it uses newer technology in a manner that enables it to play on the same field as refined class A or A/B amps.

Pandora Might Have to Pull the Plug

We hope Pandora,  a free internet based radio service, can keep it together.

Buckling under the weight of the Internet radio royalty hike that SoundExchange pushed through last July, Pandora may pull its own plug soon. Despite being one of the most popular Internet radio services, the company still isn't making money, and its founder, Tim Westergren, says it can't last beyond its first payment of the higher royalties.

Vinyl Records Live!

Caught this bit of news in today's LA Times:

According to the Recording Industry Assn., shipments of vinyl soared 36.6% from 2006 to 2007. That amounts to 1.3 million units nationwide. While the numbers are minuscule compared to CD shipments of 511 million for 2007, the news is much-welcomed by a faltering music industry.

Analysis Plus Guitar and iPod / iPhone Cable Review

Positive Feedback, a fun and informative online HiFi review e-zine, just posted an exhaustive review of some Analysis Plus cable.  We love this high performance, value oriented cable brand.  No frills design at a decent price.  We hear they make stuff for NASA.

"Ok, it might seem a little strange to see a review of a guitar and iPhone cable at a high-performance audio site like Positive Feedback Online, but I happen to know that a lot of you also play the guitar and use an iPhone in your day-to-day life. Given that I thought I'd share a couple of discoveries with you that perform really well and have the potential to enrich your musical life: the Analysis Plus Yellow Flex Oval Guitar Cable and the Analysis Plus iPod/iPhone cable."

New Sonos Update Announced...And FREE Music!

Sonos continues to innovate.   Read about the the new ZP120 and ZP90 (when purchased together it is known as the bundle 150) and upgraded software.  Now works with latest N wireless networks!

"Sonos' Bundle 150 includes their new ZonePlayers (ZP 120 and ZP 90), updated Sonos 2.6 software, and the company's wireless Controller. With the ZP 120, Sonos has shrunken their original ZP 100 by 35%, while increasing the power to 55Wpc and doubling its wireless range. Now, three antennas in the little feet of the ZonePlayers all send and receive music using something called MIMO (Multiple Input / Multiple Output). Sonos VP Thomas Cullen explained that the signals of the previous ZPs were not strong enough to penetrate through the thick walls of European homes. With three antennas all working simultaneously, rather than two taking turns, the idea is that Sonos should be able to send music to any room of your home, in addition to garages or sheds outside of your home. In Jersey City, I could probably send music from my apartment all the way to the bodega at the end of my block."

Follow this link to see the entire blog based review by Steven Mejias (Courtesy of Stereophile Online).  Free music is available from Sonos if you buy new or update your software.  More info about this special Sonos offer can be found here.

DISH going 1080p August 1st

It's true.  DISH Network (parent company Echostar is headquartered just moments from our store) will be the first to broadcast a full 1080p signal into your home. Near Blu-Ray quality available from your DISH box! From Electronista:

Satellite TV provider DISH Network today became the first known TV broadcaster to put out video in a full 1080p (1920x1080 progressive) resolution. Starting with an August 1st Video On Demand option for the movie I Am Legend, DISH says it will start offering 1080p whenever the content is available rather than the lower-resolution 1080i (interlaced) or 720p HD normally aired on DISH and other TV services. Using VOD effectively gives the image quality of Blu-ray but at a lower price than renting a disc, the satellite firm claims.

The upgrade in resolution isn't available for all subscribers but will be a no-charge addition for anyone who owns an HD DVR capable of playing MPEG-4 video. A software upgrade will be pushed out at the same time as the 1080p service that enables playing the video format, though no mention is made of supporting the HD resolution forrecording regular TV shows.
